The United States Power Squadrons ® is a non-profit organization devoted to boating education and promoting safe boating, It is comprised of 33 districts and over 400 squadrons. USPS is the nations largest boating education organization offering several boating courses to non-members and dozens of advanced, elective and supplemental courses to our members. Course fees are low because they cover only books, exams and possibly housing costs. There is never a charge for instruction. Several courses focus on computerized and GPS technology and interface to the latest Maptech charting.
In USPS, the district serves as the link between the national organization and the local squadron. It serves as a resource to the squadron leadership by providing information to the squadrons. It also provides feedback to the national organization about items of concern to the squadrons. Each squadron officer has a district counterpart who can provide information and answer questions.
District 20 covers Central and Northern Illinois, the Northwestern corner of Indiana, and the Southeastern corner of Wisconsin. There are 16 squadrons in District20. Squadrons range in membership from about 30 to 300. District 20 has over 1500 members.
District 20 hosts Conferences twice each year. These weekend-long
meetings are for all members of the district. They include business
meetings and seminars as well as many informal gatherings. Seminar
subjects include boating safety related programs, talks on cruising
experiences, information on USPS course plans, and training programs
for members. A representative of the USPS Chief Commander attends and
participates in many of the meetings.
