LLPS Sailing Classes ---
LLPS Sailing Class The United States Power Squadrons®, Land of Lincoln Power Squadron is offering a classroom series on SAIL. The class covers a wide range of subjects such as sailboat rigs, sail plans, hull types, standing rigging, wind, sailing upwind, sailing downwind, docking, anchoring, marlinespike, seamanship, navigation rules, etc. The classroom series will be augmented by occasional on the water experience. As you can tell, we’re going to be busy and we’re always in need of instructors. Boating Safety Course instructors must have completed the Instructor Development course and we’re looking to start one soon. If you have the heart of a teacher and would like to pass along your knowledge, please step up when the time comes. Additional fall classes may include Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Seamanship, Marine Electronics and Engine Maintenance. I’ve been asked about all of the above but we may have to narrow the list down to those in most demand. Consequently, please let me know of any educational goals you have. If you have anyone in mind let them know about the opportunity to learn sail. It’s another great way to introduce prospective members to the squadron and membership benefits. Here’s hoping you get your bottom wet soon... boat bottom, that is. Greg Kelso, P, Squadron Education Officer
Advanced Piloting(AP) is the final part of the inland and coastal navigation series. This material continues to build on the base developed in Piloting, and includes practical use of additional electronic navigation systems and other advanced techniques for finding position. Among topics covered are: finding position using bearings and angles, collision avoidance using GPS and RADAR, what to do when the electronics fail, tides, currents and wind and their effect on piloting, and electronic navigation with GPS, chart plotters, RADAR, autopilots, etc. Application of course lectures takes place through practical in-class and at-home exercises.

Subject matter includes: basic concepts of celestial navigation; how to use the mariner’s sextant to take sights of the sun, moon, planets and stars; the importance and techniques of accurate time determination; use of the Nautical Almanac; how to reduce sights to establish lines of position (LOPs); and the use of special charts, plotting sheets and other navigational data for offshore positioning and passage planning.

Navigation (N) This is the second part of the study of offshore navigation. It further develops the student’s understanding of celestial theory. The student is introduced to additional sight reduction techniques and develops greater skill and precision in sight taking, positioning and the orderly methods of carrying on the day’s work of a navigator at sea. Of particular interest and importance is the study of offshore navigation using minimal data and/or equipment, such as when on a disabled vessel or lifeboat.
